China Launches Folk Song Translation Project

China's Shaanxi province has some of the most country's well-known folk song traditions. Local cultural groups have launched a project to translate the provincial songs. into several foreign languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. Xi'ax Music Conservatory and the Shaanxi Translators Association are participating in the project, and more than eighty folk songs have already been translated. Cross-cultural communication has proven to be the most difficult challenge for translators. The project's next phase will have international students sing the translated songs, looking for any dissonance between the music and the lyrics. In October, a national seminar will be held in Xi'an, the Shaanxi capital, so that project translators can share ideas with scholars and language specialists from across China.
