ὁ φόνου δίκην φεύγων ταῖς κακῶν ρητόρων μηχαναῖς οὐκ ἐσῴζετο. φονέας γὰρ οὐκ ἐφίλει ὁ δῆμος.

My translation: The murderer who fled justice, was not saved in the battles of the bad speakers. For the people did not love the murderer.

Is this correct?

thank you.

Distinguish between ὁ φονεύς  and ὁ φόνος.  They're both in this sentence.

We've seen the idiom δίκην φεύγω before.  It takes the genitive of the thing you're indicted for.

Distinguish between μάχη and μηχανή.

φονέας is PLURAL.  And there's no "the."
