ἀρχὴν μὲν μὴ φῦναι ἐπιχθονίοισιν ἄριστον· φύντα δ’ ὅμως ὤκιστα πύλας Ἀίδαο περῆσαι -> First, it is best for mortals to not be born. If born, however, to pass through Hades' gates very soon (Certamen Homeri et Hesiodi 78-79).  Cf. Theognis 425-27: Πάντων μὲν μὴ φῦναι ἐπιχθονίοισιν ἄριστον / μηδ' ἐσιδεῖν αὐγὰς ὀξέος ἠελίου, / φύντα δ' ὅπως ὤκιστα πύλας Ἀίδαο περῆσαι ("Of all things it is best for mortals not to be born, and not to look upon the beams of bright sun, but if born, to pass through Hades' gates as soon as possible."

αρχήν μεν μη φύναι επιχθονίοισιν άριστον· φύντα δ’ όμως ώκιστα πύλας Αίδαο περήσαι
