εθνικές παρακαταθήκες -> national heritage

Here's the entire sentence:

So then, they will surrender their military powers, economies, and ethnic heritage (?) to the European government which will henceforth be a united and all-power government.

"Heritage" doesn't seem the the right word, but what else is there?  Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

I would go for ''national heritage'' and I think it is right, in a metaphorical sense.

Or, a bit more rhetorically, if the style is appropriate:

So then, they will hand over their military powers, their economies, (and) their national heritage(,) to the European state, which will henceforth be/become a united and all-powerful body.
But how shall men meditate in that, which they cannot understand? How shall they understand that which is kept close in an unknown tongue?
