Un volant d'inertie est, dans une machine tournante, une masse liée à la partie animée d'un mouvement de rotation, répartie autour de l'axe de telle sorte qu'elle confère à l'ensemble une plus grande inertie en rotation, dans le but de rendre plus régulier le régime de fonctionnement, en s'opposant aux à-coups dus au moteur entraînant le dispositif ou au récepteur consommant l'énergie transmise.
