Λυκαμβὶς ἀρχή -> Lycambean magistracy

Finally, it is worth noting that Nomoi (fr. 138) contains a similar multi-functional allusion to another Archilochean model. Hesychius names this play as the source of the phrase Λυκαμβὶς ἀρχή, “a Lycambean magistracy”. The further details in Photius– that the phrase refers to Archilochus’ feud with his would-be father-in-law and that a “polemarch” was involved– have been interpreted in terms of the feud between Cratinus and the eponymous archon whose refusal to give him a chorus was satirized in the poet’s Boukoloi (cf. frs. 17 and 20). Once again, the poet’s civic mission – the high Solonian stance – mingles in his comic presentation with his own artistic self-regard.
