VIII.

According to the source of this fragment, Heraclitus used the word ἀγχιβασίην.  Kahn put it best when he said that there is no reason to doubt the authenticity of this quotation, but neither is there any context to help us figure out how Heraclitus used this word.

For ἀγχιβασίη LSJ points to ἀμφισβήτησις (dispute) and DGE translates as approximation.

For ἀγχιβασίην, there is no entry.

ἀγχιβασίην is simply the accusative form of ἀγχιβασίη.  It's quoted as an accusative because in its source (the Suda), it is the direct object of the verb (understood) whose subject is Ἡράκλειτος (Suda, alpha.1762.1 <Ἀμφισβατεῖν:> ἔνιοι τὸ ἀμφισβητεῖν, Ἴωνες δὲ καὶ <Ἀγχιβατεῖν.> καὶ <Ἀγχιβασίην> Ἡράκλειτος.  ["and Heraclitus (has, says) 'ἀγχιβασίη.' "])  I think you want to keep the nominative in your title, as does LSJ.

The reason I entered it thus is because it is a slogan used by Golden Dawn members, as well as being a fragment.

Wow, I knew those guys were dumbshits, but I didn't know how dumb!  I wonder what they think Heraclitus meant by that word?

For some strange reason fascists and religious fanatics (traits often coexisting in the same person) in Greece share some sort of twisted taste for Ancient Greece. As if they could have some of its glory by claiming ancestral rights.
