Is this a true quote?

Of course it's true ((-: — but it's in no ancient corpus that I know of. Sounds more like Ben Franklin:

As I say, it's in no ancient corpus that I know of. And it's not very good Greek, either. Γάρ is used incorrectly, καταισχύνει is misspelled, etc. Schoolboy stuff, maybe. Where'd you get it?

Περί του πέρδεσθαι ου καταισχύνη έλεγαν οι αρχαίοι.

Spiro, I see you've changed τὸ πέρδεσθαι in the title to περί τοῦ πέρδεσθαι, and I've emended my translation accordingly. Do we now have the original words of the quotation? Sorry, I can't find it in the refs. you provided.

Well, I am sure I have heard variations but have not found them on line -:)
I changed according to the only on-line source of the quote.
